There are two ways to arrive Tibet; one from mainland China and another from Kathmandu, Nepal. If you are planning to arrive Tibet via mainland China, you need to get Chinese visa from the Chinese Embassy in your country. Since, Tibet Travel Bureau in Tibet (TTB) doesn’t accept visa application from individuals, you have to process through an authorized travel agent. Once you have the visa, you have to send the scanned copy of visa and passport to your travel agent. Your passport should have the validity of at least six months for a single or double entry visa and at least nine months for a multiple entry visa. Your travel agent will process the documents to TTB for Tibet entry permit. When the permit is issued, you can collect it from the place you are arriving or staying in mainland China. If you are entering Tibet from Kathmandu, you have to apply for both Chinese visa and Tibet entry permit from Kathmandu. So, you need to arrive Kathmandu few days earlier (check with you travel agent about the number of days) before your travel to Tibet. Please note that Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu issues visas only on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 0900 hrs to 1100 hrs. Your travel agent representative will help you get the visa. Visa regulations in Tibet keep changing. So you need to be updated about the latest visa information details.
